Within the last decade, we have seen a tremendous incline to the inclusion of Afrocentrism and urban trends in the high fashion world. Within recent series, haute couture designers have been mainstreaming urban campaigns and incorporating urban looks into their current or upcoming collection.
Though this allows high fashion to hit the streets, it still plays into cultural appropriation. Most designers that have been promoting the new “Era of Urban” in their campaigns have white washed our culture to appeal to the masses. The sad truth is, this is another example of how we as a conglomerate are still being robbed. They mainstream our creativity and our fashion sense but never seem to completely incorporate us into the finished product. Urban culture is something that is proved to withstand its time with fashion. Being incorporated only a few decades back, we have found high fashion picking up our trendy urban fads and incorporating them into their world. Within the year alone we have seen a few whitewashed urban based styles rip through fashion with so much as to include one “ethnic” model .
Staples such as denim, sweat suits/jump suits and sneakers have been accents to the most regal fashion designers and their collections. With the addition of the “urban attire“, the look of high fashion has hit the streets in a “city chic” feel .
Now we see some of the most extravagant pieces passing as everyday wear with the addition of a cute sneaker or denim jacket. Funny thing is, this urban look is loved by the same folks who refuse to appreciate where it comes from. Better yet, the young brown and urban avant-garde trendsetters usually fall short of the price range of pieces and collections they can relate to and see their styles reflected in..
How can young and hip fashion icons continue with their plight when their favorite trends are not only out of budget, but poorly misinterpreted?
When will the prominent designers of our days give the urban era credit for their latest (and upcoming) collections?
Where in the word of fashion does this make sense?
